It’s only been a few days since I stepped through the doors of Arlington Economic Development as its new director, and already I’ve witnessed many confirmations that this is a truly remarkable community. It’s no secret to anyone in the economic development arena that Arlington has suddenly been put on the map – not just nationally, but globally – as a result of the announcement that Amazon had chosen our County as the location for its coveted HQ2. That notoriety brings with it great responsibility to not only integrate the company into our community, but also to ensure that Arlington’s business core remains strong – that we continue to support small business, in community-building, and ensuring that the values we as Arlingtonians cherish remain strong. I’m truly humbled that County leadership has entrusted me to lead the department for this new and exciting chapter of Arlington’s economic development.
My experiences in the industry have been diverse, ranging from hyper local to statewide campaigns – always with the goal of strengthening regional economies, maximizing economic impact and truly raising the standard of the community. From an introduction to the field as a camp counselor helping kids learn about entrepreneurship to working on statewide community development campaigns and in my most recent role leading a multifaceted economic development strategy in Danville, VA, I’ve always kept the same personal goal when it comes to my work – building on a community’s vision for the future.
In my first few months here at the helm of Arlington Economic Development, I really want to keep an attentive ear to the business community. I want to hear from Arlington’s small-business owners and entrepreneurs. I want to sit down with members of the education community and with our neighborhood and civic leaders. I want this to be a collaborative effort and determine how we continue to raise the tide for all of Arlington’s businesses. We in Arlington will continue to collaborate with our regional partners in Northern Virginia to ensure our region has a stronger voice statewide, nationally and globally. I’m a collaborator and communicator by nature, and I look forward to working in tandem with all of you to build on past success and ensure Arlington’s role as an innovative leader in the future.Topic: Economic Update, From the Director
