Amazon HQ2: Then and Now

On November 13, 2018, Amazon announced that it had selected Arlington as the location for its new second headquarters (HQ2). The news followed a year-long process in which Amazon considered 238 proposals from communities across North America.

As one of the most significant economic development projects in recent history, Amazon's decision to select Northern Virginia validated the region as a world-class hub for the tech industry.

HQ2 Today

Leased 900K SF of Existing Office Space

Construction on Amazon's HQ2 is currently underway, with Phase 1 expected to be completed in 2023.

As of 2021, HQ2 hires have surpassed 3,500 and Amazon leases nearly 900,000 SF of existing office space in the Crystal City area of National Landing. Adjacent to the Crystal City Metro Station and new multi-family housing and mixed-use retail, the growing headquarters offers easy access for workers to transit, housing and entertainment.

By 2030, the company anticipates occupying at least four million SF of office space and creating a minimum of 25,000 jobs.

Amazon has also already proven to be a good neighbor in the community, providing support not only for Northern Virginia's tech talent pipeline but also by supporting local restaurants and making significant contributions to affordable housing projects in Arlington.

Additionally, the project will renovate the adjacent Metropolitan Park into a vibrant public open space.

Phase 2

Amazon’s Bold Vision for the Heart of HQ2

HelixAerialView.jpg In February 2021, Amazon submitted proposed development plans for the second phase of its Arlington headquarters.

As proposed, the company will develop 3.2 million square feet of new office space across three 22-story buildings, which will all be designed to LEED Platinum standards.

The site landmark building, The Helix, will feature walkable paths, collaborative workspaces, and an artist-in-residence program. Additionally, a 2.5-acre open space will be accessible for public use, including outdoor concerts, farmers' markets and more.

NOVA’s Talent Pipeline

The centerpiece of Virginia’s proposal for HQ2 was a performance-based, statewide investment in computer science and related programs to more than double Virginia’s tech-talent pipeline, which will benefit tech employers across the Commonwealth. Locally, the investment triggered the creation of innovation campuses for George Mason University in Arlington and Virginia Tech in Alexandria, which will add new tech talent to the region’s already robust tech workforce.
