On November 13, 2018, Amazon announced it had selected Arlington County as the site for its new headquarters following a year-long process that included 238 competing proposals from communities across North America.

As one of the most significant economic development projects in recent history, Amazon's decision to locate in Northern Virginia, and its growth in the subsequent years, will continues to generate significant interest.

The sections below provide historical context of the factors that led to Arlington's selection, the current status of Amazon's presence in the County, and the ongoing tech talent investments that are benefiting companies across the region.

Leveraging the region's world-class, diverse talent pool and an accessible site ripe for redevelopment, the regional proposal utilized innovative economic development tools to benefit not only Amazon, but Northern Virginia as a whole.

Amazon's workforce has grown to 1,000 employees since opening in 2019, while their 2 million square-foot headquarters is on schedule for an early 2023 completion. The company continues to hire at a rapid pace, with hundreds of current openings.

A key component of Virginia's proposal was a nearly $1 billion investment into the Commonwealth's tech talent pipeline, including the creation of innovation campuses for George Mason University and Virginia Tech in Northern Virginia.
