Formation

Formation of the Innovation District

National IQ emerged from strategic planning efforts following the announcement of Amazon’s HQ2 and the development of the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus.

Arlington Economic Development (AED) and regional partners evaluated how to formally organize National Landing’s growing concentration of corporate, research and federal assets into a defined innovation district. A 2024 feasibility assessment confirmed that the area possessed the density of industry presence, research activity and workforce talent necessary to support a nationally relevant district.

In 2025, AED and fellow founding partners established National IQ through a phased, market-informed approach, positioning the district as a long-term economic development platform grounded in existing strengths and strategic industry focus areas.

Focus Areas

Priority Technology Areas

Based on the findings of a 2024 assessment conducted by a nationally recognized innovation district consultant, National IQ concentrates on technology sectors aligned with regional strengths and national competitiveness priorities:

  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
  • Cybersecurity
  • Defense & National Security Technologies
  • Advanced Computing
  • Dual-Use & Emerging Technologies

By focusing on these sectors, the district strengthens pathways from research to commercialization while supporting both early-stage ventures and established companies.

Impact

Economic Impact & Regional Growth

National IQ enhances Arlington’s ability to compete for high-growth companies, research investment and entrepreneurial talent by organizing key assets within a coordinated district framework.

Through structured programming and cross-sector partnerships, the district is designed to:

  • Support company formation and expansions
  • Attract private capital and federal research funding
  • Generate high-quality jobs in innovation-driven industries
  • Reinforce National Landing’s role as a nationally significant innovation hub

National IQ also expands opportunity for small businesses by increasing demand for local suppliers, professional services, hospitality and cultural venues. As a long-term economic development strategy, the district supports a diversified, resilient and future-ready regional economy.
