Arlington's demand for tech talent remains high and relatively unaffected by the economic repercussions from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in addition to the challenges normally facing the highly competitive tech industry, there appears to be a new impediment -; on-boarding and hiring remotely.

There was an increase of 15,692 tech jobs posted in Q3 2020 compared to the number of tech jobs posted in Q3 of 2019. In Q3 2020, there were approximately 112,168 tech jobs posted in Arlington, and there were approximately 96,476 tech jobs posted in Q3 2019.

This increase was largely foreseeable, but the sharp incline in the median job posting duration was not.

In Q3 2019, the median duration for a tech job posting in Arlington was 36 days. One year later, the median tech job posting duration was 66 days. However, this increase is not unique to Arlington, as the DMV region in Q3 2019 had a median tech job posting duration of 33 days, and in Q3 of 2020, that duration increased to 54 days.

Relatively speaking, there were not any major industry shifts that could have caused this sharp incline other than the impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the precise cause is not yet known, it is worth noting the possible effect remote work has had on hiring and on-boarding tech talent.
