The Cinema Academy (TCA) is a filmmaking program geared at middle school students within the DMV, founded and directed by award-winning independent filmmaker and Fulbright Scholar Professor Lucy Gebre-Egziabher. TCA trains 7th and 8th-grade students in the art of storytelling and teaches them hands-on filmmaking skills such as screenwriting, directing, production and post-production.

Located at HB Woodlawn in Arlington, The Cinema Academy started in August 2021 and runs from September to May. The program culminates with an annual film festival to showcase their films to family, friends, and the community. Currently, TCA is recruiting the 2022-23 cohort of students to start in September 2022. “HB Woodlawn represents a prime location to welcome students from across the region,” said Professor Gebre-Egziabher.

With Arlington being the center of area arts and a prime location to welcome area students from Virginia, DC and Maryland, it’s no surprise that The Cinema Academy chose Arlington. “Arlington’s commitment to the arts and its diversity stood out the most to us, along with its incredible culinary offerings and bike paths,” said Professor Gebre-Egziabher.

Parents and students who would like to learn more about The Cinema Academy can join one of their upcoming information sessions via Zoom. The Cinema Academy is offering two upcoming information sessions:
