Baking for Change

Early 20th century suffragettes holding a large cake

Suffragists were no strangers to using the skills and knowledge they had to support the move to grant women the right to vote. Alongside gatherings, meetings, protests and marches, suffragists published recipes and cookbooks to raise funds for the cause. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, a Bake Sale on March 4 reminds us of the courage and conviction that gives us all a voice in our government today.

This month, Made in Arlington teamed up with Arlington County's WomenWork (WoW) Employee Resource Group and Arlington Public Library to raise awareness of voter advocacy by inviting local women bakers for a one day pop-up. In 1920, suffragists selling cookbooks were thought to be subversive, but perhaps they were crowdfunding way ahead of their time.

Join local bakers to satisfy the sweet tooth that led to securing the vote. Wednesday, March 4th (by command!), at 2100 Clarendon Blvd, Plaza Branch Library, 1st floor lobby. 11am -2pm.
