On Monday, March 25, German discount grocery company Lidl opened its 67 store in the U.S. – and its first store in Arlington.

Lidl Express, a new, smaller concept store for Lidl, is nearly 1,000 square feet and located on the ground floor of its U.S. headquarters in Potomac Yard.

Arlington has been working closely with Lidl for several years now, from the initial attraction of its North American headquarters in 2015, through its build-out, occupancy and growth and most recently on its newest retail concept Lidl Express.

Lidl expanded to the U.S. in late 2015, opening its North American headquarters in Potomac Yard at 3500 S. Clark Street. Since then, Lidl has opened 66 stores on the east coast spanning from New Jersey to Georgia. Lidl stores in the U.S. are typically around 20,000 square feet.

Lidl Express, a convenience-sized store with a little more than 1,000 square feet, has coffee, fresh-basked croissants and bread daily, plus some prepared foods. Following the company's model to partnered with local and regional farms and suppliers, it also offers fresh produce such as heads of lettuce from a farm in Fredericksburg and hothouse-grown tomatoes from Dublin, Virginia.

The store is now open to the public.
