On July 18, 2015, the Arlington County Board approved the Arlington County Retail Plan. This updated plan provides a more flexible approach to retail in Arlington.
The adoption of the plan is the culmination of work started by the Economic Development Commission (EDC) and its Retail Task Force. The analysis — Boutiques, Bistros & Banks — focused on the characteristics of successful retail and included a series of recommendations to update policies related to retail (2001 Rosslyn to Ballston Retail Action Plan, standard site plan conditions, and various provisions of the zoning and sign ordinances). As a tandem study, AED staff prepared Room for Improvement, a compilation of some of the problems that revised policies would be designed to solve.
An extensive public process preceded the adoption of the Arlington County Retail Plan including work sessions with the County Board and numerous meetings with the EDC, the Planning Commission and the County Board.
