Marian Marquez is Director of Business Investment for Arlington Economic Development. In this role she oversees Arlington’s efforts in business retention, recruitment, entrepreneur support and catalyzing the innovation economy. Her division serves as the first point of contact for companies looking to expand or relocate. Marian joined AED in 2014 to stand up the County’s international and business retention programs, which are focused on attracting international investment and supporting the growth of Arlington companies through targeted programs and services. In her roles at AED, Marian has combined her passion for public service with expertise in strategic planning and performance management to promote economic development in Arlington and the greater Capital region.
Prior to joining AED, Marian held roles in the private and public sectors including several years with the U.S. Trade & Development Agency managing infrastructure-focused development portfolios in South Asia and the Former Soviet Union. Most recently, Marian worked as a Global Financial Advisor at Exxon Mobil Corporation, where she advised on the financial aspects of global energy projects ranging from $5 - $500 million.
Marian’s love of all things international stems from a childhood spent as a diplomatic brat in Hungary, Germany, Mexico and Austria. After completing her BA at Stanford University in Russian studies, she moved to Moscow to work as a translator. She went on to complete a Master’s Degree in International Business at the Fletcher School, Tufts University. As a native Arlingtonian, Marian is thrilled to be back “home” and working to make Arlington an even better place to live and work. In her “free” time, she is raising three kids under the age of five and enjoys teaching job skills to low income adults on a volunteer basis.
